Drive Speed Control and Maneuverability
The original idea of using high performance fins on a bodyboard started with Christian Perreira and Kyle Maligro. Christian Grew up in Haleiwa on the north shore of Oahu. Being one of the top drop knee riders in Hawaii has gotten him featured in various videos and magazines including the cover of Riptide magazine and a center spread. The idea of adding fins to his board started with him working at Island Fin Designs foiling skegs for a living. Experimenting with different boards from his sponsor Toobs, he set small fins into their bottoms. He discovered the advantages of using skegs, at places like Backdoor and Off the Wall, "they keep you tighter and higher in the barrell."

Just in case you're not familiar with Kyle's background, he was one of the original members of the Kauai Classic team and is one of the top professional bodyboarders in the world. His skills are strong in small or big waves, prone and drop knee. Pushing the level of bodyabording way ahead of his time, Kyle was one of the first to bust drop knee rolls, airs and tail slides. His innovative approach to bodyboarding has made him one of the most versatile riders utilizing the most innovative equipment. The use of fins have permanently been added to his quiver of boards and has even been released on one of his models from BZ, the Program. "The type of line you draw into the barrel is very important," says Kyle. "You want to make sure your inside edge is secure in the water. If it isn't you'll be sliding sideway or you'll get lipped. The Program has really helped me tons in holding a good edge in the barrel and it actually gives me more speed to make it out."

Vektor started when I was living on Kauai and tried what Christian was experimenting with. I started to design a fin around a bodyboards functions, drew up a template and got my first prototype made. I rode this template and noticed the difference in the ride right away. It felt really natural and smooth. I knew that this was a solid template that was specifically designed for drop knee. I was amped on it and learned everything I could about fins and how they work. I eventually started to work for the same fin design company as Christian on the North Shore. I would make a fin then surf it after work. With the knowledge that I gained, I fine tuned the fins and made the correct adjustments. I started to experiment with different fin templates and learned first hand how they effect different aspects of performance in the water.

I've been working on the fins with the help of test riders and designers in the underground, ameutur, and pro levels for several years now. The fin angles, templates, installation, positioning, and performance have evolved over the years. Vektor's unique fin template designed specifically for drop knee is properly balanced to give you drive, speed, control and maneuverability. Established in 2001, created in Hawaii, and tested around the world. Vektor Fin Designs has now developed into the most advanced and functional high performance system for bodyboarding.
